Senate body OKs report recommending social media platforms be held accountable for disinformation
AS THE 18th Congress draws to a close, a Senate committee has approved a report recommending that social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Tiktok be held accountable for the spread of disinformation.
Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes, drafted the report contained in approved Senate Resolution 953 on social media disinformation. (more…)
Globe intensifies drive vs piracy as PH posts highest content piracy rate in Asia
Globe has further intensified its drive against illegal streaming and downloading of content as the Philippines, together with Vietnam and Malaysia, again topped the list of Asian countries with the highest piracy rates.
Piracy has been a lingering problem around the world, posing a danger to the viability of businesses and the livelihood of content creators, and also exposing users to malware and other online threats.
“The ill-effects of online piracy cannot be underestimated. Globe continues to ramp up initiatives to mitigate, if not fully stop piracy, and make a positive societal impact. GCash tightens user verification process to enhance traceability ahead of 2022 elections
GCash, the country’s leading mobile wallet, has pledged to implement safeguards to prevent possible misuse of the platform for illegal vote-buying for the upcoming 2022 local and national elections.
The top e-wallet made this commitment together with other fintech companies at the recent virtual launch of FinTech Alliance Philippines and the E-Money Association of the Philippines’ (EMAP) advocacy campaign on responsible use of digital payment platforms. Privacy Commission orders immediate takedown of four online lending apps
The National Privacy Commission (NPC) has ordered the immediate takedown of four online lending apps (OLAs), JuanHand, Pesopop, CashJeep, and Lemon Loan to protect the data privacy rights of borrowers.
These apps have been the subject of various complaints of unauthorized use of personal data that resulted in harassment and shaming of borrowers and are currently being investigated for violations of the Data Privacy Act and other NPC issuances. (more…)
