OpenHardware My World! RasPi Jam Pilipinas 2017 + Open Hardware Celebration

April 1, 2017 @ 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Background and Rationale

In the 1970s, the earliest personal computers in the form of microcomputers were sold as do-it-yourself kits with schematic diagrams for computer hobbyists and technicians. This spawned the birth of an early generation of engineers, coders, makers and technicians who tinkered with different computer components and learned how to build and design their own computers for a variety of uses.

Today, proprietary computer systems are more the norm. Computer users buy pre-assembled systems without having to think about how and why it works – both in terms of hardware as well as code. Unlike hobbyists and enthusiasts of the 70s, today’s computer generation are hardwired for instant fulfillment through the purchase of pre-developed apps and devices.

This is where open hardware projects like the Raspberry Pi come in. Since its first release in 2012, the Pi has inspired millions of students, computer engineers, coders, and enthusiasts to create fun as well as practical projects using the $35-dollar credit-card sized fully programmable and connectible computer.

Now in its fifth year, the celebration and promotion of the Raspberry Pi will be held on March 14, 2017 through simultaneous Raspberry Jams worldwide.

At the same time, this is a good time (as any other) to celebrate open hardware in general. These technologies, most notably single-board processors like the Pi and the Arduino, serve as excellent gateways to foray into an intersection of programming and engineering. They also unlock creativity and resourcefulness, while at the same time promote the open source philosophies of open knowledge, community sharing and involvement.

Originally conceptualized as a standalone RasPi Jam Pilipinas event, OpenHardware My World! is organized by the Computer Professionals’ Union (CPU) to showcase the different applications of open hardware. It also aims to highlight the talent and creativity of Filipino students, engineers, technicians, hobbyists, and makers. This is organized in the spirit of spreading the good word on free open source software/hardware (FOSS/H) and in recognition of FOSS/H as viable, affordable, sustainable, and useful alternatives to proprietary models, especially for users in less developed countries like the Philippines.

Goals and Objectives

  • To showcase homegrown open hardware projects of Filipino IT students, professionals, and enthusiasts
  • To foster a general understanding of free open source software/hardware (FOSS/H), and encourage adoption of free software and open standards
  • To create a venue for enthusiasts and advocates of FOSS/H to connect, join and create communities
  • To discuss and create a general understanding of other ICT issues that is relevant to the Filipino people today

Event Overview

OpenHardware My World! will be a vibrant gathering of ICT students, professionals, as well as FOSS/H enthusiasts and advocates. The event stands as an opportunity to promote homegrown open hardware projects, share skills and knowledge, and collectively pave a way forward for FOSS/H in the Philippine context.

The OpenHardware My World! program seeks to promote inquiry, foster dialogue, enhance skills, and encourage individual and collective action among attendees. The day-long hands-on exhibit and demo sessions will feature the various uses and applications of open hardware, as well as seminars on using different open hardware devices.

In the spirit of knowledge sharing and free and open computer systems, OpenHardware My World! will be free of charge for all participants.
